A narrative music video
Ausfahrt Richtung Nacht (eng. Exit Towards Night), a song by Etage and Yano, is a music video that focuses on storytelling through character interactions and colors.
I created this project during my sixth semester at university, completing it over the course of four months and under the guidance of Motion Design Professor Etienne Heinrich. The aim of the course was to create a narrative music video.
The music video consists of 41 illustrated scenes, each drawn by me and animated in its own unique way.
Bennos Character Design

Benno is the main character of the music video and acts as a point of identification for the viewer.
He is designed to resemble an average high school student, while still having a few distinctive features that make him recognizable, such as his eyebrow slit, small irises, and oval nose.
Cecilias Character Design

Cecilia, Benno’s love interest and secretly a vampire, started out with a rather stereotypical vampire design: black hair, full-body clothing, and red eyes.
As the story developed, her concept shifted from an alternative emo girl who had been a vampire her whole life to a fashionable “girl next door” who had only recently been bitten and was slowly turning into a vampire, struggling to control her bloodlust.
Outfit Design

These rough outfit sketches were created as a visual guide for the illustrations and to keep track of Cecilia’s transformation throughout the story.
As her transformation progresses, her skin becomes duller, her eyes grow increasingly red, and her ears become more pointed.
